Taqiyya (alternative spellings taqiyeh, taqiya, taqiyah, tuqyah) is a form of religious dissimulation or a legal dispensation whereby a believing individual can deny his faith or commit otherwise illegal or blasphemous acts while they are at risk of significant persecution.

Taqiyya means a Muslim can lie about his beliefs and do something which is not allowed in Islam to deceive non-Muslims if he fears the risk of persecution or getting large opposition from non-Muslim if he tells the truth.
For example:- A religious Muslim in front of idol worshippers says, he respects other religions, Muslims have no problem with idol worshippers. It may well be a case of Taqiyya where he is not telling the truth because he knows he will face large opposition if he says Islam doesn't allow idol worshipping.
Taqiyya was developed to protect Shia Muslims from the Sunnis but Sunni Muslims also practice Taqiyya where it is necessary, where they face danger if they tell the truth.
